Cars without buttons? Consoles of the future.

Remember when your cell phone used to have one button for every number?  The phone in your hand today probably has at most one button and, of course, a smart touch screen.  That same technology for your car is not far behind.

Adams Engineers & Equipment is proud to represent ENGEL injection molding machines and plastic processing technologies, who has teamed up with Magna Exterior & Interior Systems, to showcase a glimpse of car consoles of the future at NPE 2012

How the technology works:  ENGEL clear melt technology and the integration of a capacitive foil using in-mold labeling allows vehicle controls to be just as elegant as smartphone controls in the future.  Magna-produced components and systems are used in the design, development, and manufacture of automotive systems, including this demonstration.

See it in person at NPE 2012:  The demo automobile cockpit will be onsite in ENGEL’s booth at NPE 2012.  Various control functions can be activated through the center console in the simulation cell.  Lightly touch one of the functional elements below the completely enclosed surface and experience firsthand what you see in the news!

Something to write home about:  Center consoles with a sensitive surface will be manufactured in the NPE 2012 ENGEL booth on an ENGEL duo 2050/350 injection molding machine.  That’s postcard material for the fam back home!   And by the way, this will be the first showing of this machine size in North America, which brings the power of the duo large-scale machines – maximum power on a small footprint – to the lower clamp force range.

Why we’re excited: The vision of a vehicle interior without buttons and switches is becoming increasingly tangible. “This trend not only gives interior designers a new level of freedom; it also reduces the costs of producing functional elements,” states Mark Sankovitch, ENGEL North America President.

A Step Ahead: “We are already talking to various OEMs and automotive companies. In four to five years the first vehicles will be equipped with this sensitive surface technology,” adds Franz Füreder, Head of ENGEL automotive at ENGEL Headquarters in Schwertberg/Austria.

Project Collaboration: Several companies, in addition to Magna, are involved as ENGEL system partners for this project. The mold maker is Schöfer from Schwertberg/Austria; Hennecke from Sankt Augustin/Germany is the exclusive project partner for polyurethane technology and the functional foils are supplied by plastic electronic GmbH in Linz/Austria.
